Viognier

What is it?

Viognier is a white wine grape originating in France. This wine was actually close to extinct around 50 years ago and has come back in popularity since then. This wine is a rich, oily, white wine, with many similarities to Chardonnay, especially when aged in oak. Viognier is also known for being highly aromatic.

Primary flavors include tangerine, peach, mango, honeysuckle, and rose. Suggested pairings include grilled peaches, roasted turkey, scallops, and Indian curry.

Molly's Rating and Tasting Notes

8.0. I get some honey and cantaloupe on the nose. The taste has much more minerality than expected - almost what I imagine licking a clean rock would do to one's tastebuds. There is some nice juiciness as well, however, which adds a nice sweetness to an interesting white wine. All in all, I think this would be a nice wine to add to our regular rotation. I could see this being good with grilled salmon or a mushroom risotto,

Ryan's Rating and Tasting Notes

8.2. On the nose I get some tangerine, lime, some floral notes, and vanilla mixed with some warm spices. Upon tasting, I get notes similar to those that I experienced upon smelling. The tangerine is a bit more pronounced on the tongue and there's an added minerality with some extra sweetness that wasn't really picked up on in the nose. It's quite smooth, with a little bit of acidity, and the sensation lingers for a while as the wine coats the mouth. It's a little bit sweet, but not overly so. Overall, a good wine that I would have again.
