Torrontés

What is it??

This white grape hails from Argentina, and it is known for its floral, peach, and apricot aromas [1]. There are three varieties of Torrontés in Argentina; the most popular variety is called Torrontés Riojano, and it is the most aromatic of the three varieities. Torrontés Riojano is the variety most often used for any Argentinian wine that is just labeled as Torrontés [2].

During a trip to California, Molly found this wine and brought it back since it is rare enough that wine stores in the Lincoln/Omaha area don't appear to carry it. Ryan made rice, garlicky bean sprouts and spicy tofu to accompany the wine, since suggested food pairings are savory dishes made with spices and herbs [3,4].

Molly's Rating and Tasting Notes

7.6. Very true to description. Peachy and floral on the nose, almost entirely floral on the tongue to me. Not a dry wine, but not as sweet as some. The finish has hints of citrus. Some lemon essesnces throughout.

Ryan's Rating and Tasting Notes

7.6. On the nose, white peach and rose. It smells reminiscent of a particular spot in the UCLA botanical gardens in the northeast corner of the turtle pond. I could never pinpoint which flower created that scent, and today is another reminder of that disappointment. As for the taste, there's not much to be said that hasn't been said already. It is very floral, and has a tea-like presence. There is some acidity, giving familiar sensations of citrus. Beneath the covers, one can find a peppery note, maybe trying to stay away from the cold as I couldn't pick it up when I first tasted the wine (when it was coldest). Overall a very unique and interesting white wine. Would recommend others to try, but I don't know how often I will return to it.
