White Zinfandel
What is it?
White Zinfandel is a rosé-style wine made from Zinfandel grapes. Wine folklore is that White Zinfandel was created by mistake when all of the yeast in a batch of wine died [2]. The result is a sweeter and lighter wine made from the same grapes as in Zinfandel wine (see last week's post!).
References we were looking at while writing this post kept referring to this wine as a fun pink wine "good for a girls' night". Primary flavors in White Zinfandel are bright red fruits, strawberry, raspberry, cherry, and citrus [2]. Suggested pairings are salads and seafood. We had this wine with Thai food, which was a relatively decent pairing. This was another fun Trader Joe's find.
Molly's Rating and Tasting Notes
8.2. On the nose, I'm getting a pleasant blend of strawberry and raspberry. It's a very smooth wine, and the finish reminds me of a strawberry smoothie or strawberry shortcake: smooth and sweet with a little bit of creaminess. I get a lot of fruit essence, not much else. It's an enjoyable wine that fits into my sorority girl wine persona. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes sweet pink wines like Pink Moscato or the like.
Ryan's Rating and Tasting Notes
7.7. On the nose I'm getting strawberry and rhubarb as well as a little bit of cream and raspberry. Upon tasting, the first thing that comes to mind is "sweet". My unacclimated tongue might have confused it for water mixed with simple syrup, but after many additional sips I can now confidently say that it is indeed not water mixed with simple syrup. Some flavors that I get most prominently are strawberry and cream mixed with a little bit of grape skin. There's also some dark fruit vibes deep under the surface that are reminiscent of red Zinfandels. The finish is nice as it lingers in your mouth but doesn't overstay its welcome. Overall, an enjoyable wine that comes at a very affordable price.
